Mouth Cancer Symptoms you shouldn’t ignore (08/06/25)

National Smile Month (12 May – 12 June 2025) is the UK’s largest campaign dedicated to improving oral health. It’s the perfect opportunity to check in on your daily habits—and your overall mouth health.
At ProFresh UK, we believe oral care should go beyond surface-level freshness. That’s why this Smile Month, we want to highlight something that isn’t talked about enough: mouth cancer symptoms, and how to spot them early.
Why Smile Month Matters. More than 8,000 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer each year in the UK and cases are on the rise. Yet most people don’t know the early warning signs.
Smile Month encourages good daily habits like brushing twice a day, cutting back on sugar, and seeing your dentist regularly. But we also believe it’s about empowering you with knowledge so you know what to look for between appointments.
Know the Signs: Mouth Cancer Symptoms to Watch Out For
Mouth cancer can affect the lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, or roof of the mouth. If caught early, the chances of successful treatment are much higher.
Here are eight key symptoms that should never be ignored:
- An ulcer or sore in your mouth that doesn’t heal within three weeks
- A white or red patch inside the mouth or on the tongue
- A lump or swelling in your mouth, jaw or neck lasting more than three weeks
- Ongoing pain in the mouth
- Trouble chewing, swallowing, or speaking
- A numb or tingling sensation in the lips or tongue
- A persistent sore throat or hoarseness
- A feeling that something’s stuck in your throat
These symptoms might seem minor but if they persist, don’t delay. Speak to your dentist or GP. (Source: NHS UK)
What You Can Do?
Looking after your oral health isn’t just about brushing and flossing. It’s about being aware and building a complete care routine:
- Check your mouth regularly – look and feel for anything unusual
- Use a clinically effective, alcohol-free mouthwash daily like ProFresh
- Don’t skip your dentist and hygienist appointments
- If something doesn’t feel right, book a check-up without delay
A Reminder That Could Save a Life
This Smile Month, let’s go beyond fresh breath. Take a minute to check your mouth during your daily routine. Then remind someone you care about to do the same.
Because sometimes, the smallest daily habit can make the biggest difference.
Stay fresh. Stay aware. Stay smiling.
